Ok, so it’s been a while since I’ve blogged about fun projects!! Mainly because I haven’t had that much time to do fun projects lately with work and some traveling… BUT… I did finish a few things I’ve had on my “Fun craft to-do list” that I wanted to share with you!

First project – matryoshka mason jar!

I found a box of mason jars at a yard sale and took a few home with me. I came across this blog post a while before that and wanted to try out the project so figured with a 50 cent investment and leftover lace from this project I attempted to make before, I’d give it a go!

My niece, Emma, found an ad in the magazine with Matryoshka dolls and gave it to me so I thought I’d add my own little spin on the decoration. Here’s what I did:

Got my materials together, hot glue gun, mason jar, lace

Then cut out Matryoshka dolls and out everything together!

Then found the PERFECT place in my apt and put some little tea light candles inside.. voila! Love them!

Next up is my new and improved armoire!!

I re-arranged our room when it was raining in March and created a whole new wall open for new furniture! LOVE when that happens!! So of course I started hunting for something perfect. Went to estate sales.. always a rip off. Yard sales didn’t have much but then I randomly went to this rummage sale at a high school in some town outside of Sacramento (no clue where I was) and this beautiful armoire was standing in a pile of stuff!! They had $70 on it… but I left with it for $50. Yeah!!

Here’s what I did… took me the past 2 months to do, but hey, at least it’s finally done!

This is the original. I like the original dark wood, but it’s just too dark for my space so I wanted to lighten it up:

Then I hit up Ace Hardware to select paint… took me like 20 minutes to decide on a color!

Gave it a few coats and spray painted the hardware black for a bit of a modern flair. 😉

Next up was decorating it. Of course Martha came in handy with her new stencils!! (ps – super want to make those curtains!)

Then I stenciled away and painted some of the woodwork to stand out more:

And.. voila! My new armoire! LOVE!

What fun crafts have you done lately??

I went in to Thrift Town a few weeks ago for a dress.. and left with about 3 dresses, a few tops, some new decorations.. and a teapot lamp that needed some love. That’s usually what happens when you hit up a thrift store, right?

As soon as I put this teapot lamp in my cart, I was stopped left and right with women “oohing” and “ahhing” over the adorable thing. I guess it was just really meant to be for me because with a $3.99 price tag I’m snagged it before I did!

I set the lamp on my kitchen floor and finally got around to refurbishing it earlier this week and finished it up today. It had a cut power cord, rusted light bulb holder and was pretty dirty. With just a lamp kit from Ace Hardware, some cleaning wipes, fresh paint and a freshly created lamp shade.. it’s now the perfect fit to my office!

Here’s a look at what I did:

This is the lamp in my shopping cart 🙂

This is the lamp kit I got from Ace with everything I needed alongside my own trusty tools!

I re-wired the lamp and started putting the pieces back together!

Then came the fun stuff! Paint!!

Next up, I needed a lampshade! I stumbled upon a beat up shade, but with a good shape, at the Goodwill outlet where everything is sold by the pound. That place is AWESOME!!

Not only did I get the lampshade there, but also some perfect fabric to cover it with! With the glue gun, I was all set!

And… voila! My new most favorite lamp ever is all set up in my office! Time for business.. and some tea!

As I was unpacking my holiday box and getting up the tree, lights and decorations, I found a bag of holiday cards I was given last year. I love holiday cards, but hate them at the same time since you get them and most people just throw them away at the end of the season.

This year, I decided to take the cards that I saved from last year and turn them into a decoration for my staircase! Some red yarn, paperclips and imagination = fun new decoration that I’ll do for many years to come!

Here’s what I did:

Gathered all of my cards together and choose which ones I wanted to display

Found some pretty colored paperclips (Just wouldn’t be the same w/ regular paperclips, right??) 😉

Gathered my red yard and tied it in spaced out bows

Then I hung on my stairs!

I LOVE my new, and very cheap, holiday decoration! It’s a great conversation piece to showcase cards from loved ones and other photos!

Here’s a look at one of my favorite items, even though it’s not a card. This is me, in 1987, with a room full of Santa’s on the front page of an old San Francisco newspaper. My mom saved it after all of these years. 🙂

Happy decorating everyone!! What’s your new favorite decoration this year?

DIY Doily Lantern

Ever since I came across this post, I’ve been wanting to do this project. Months passed by, I moved, got settled and finally tried it out! I must say, it really wasn’t as easy as it seemed… and it’s not looking too cute now. I don’t think I used enough fabric stiffener; but at least I tried it! I will try to make another one soon, but here’s a look at my first try!

Instead of individual doilies like it had it the post, I found a huge lace tablecloth that I cup apart in different shapes:

Then I soaked them with fabric stiffener and placed them on the blown up balloon:

I continued cutting out the shapes and placing them on the balloon:

Then I let it dry overnight in my kitty basket. The next day, I popped the balloon and hung the lamp. It sort of lost it’s shape, so I formed it back into a circle:

Then the top started caving in. 😦 Boo! Still looks pretty though, right??? 😉

I’ve done so much moving in the past few years, I’m surprised I just don’t have one suitcase that I constantly live in to keep it simple. I am however, hopelessly devoted to decoration and knick-knacks that I acquire things upon things from apartment to apartment and just can’t let go.

Our move from Michigan last month was the one move where I was eager to just toss stuff so we could manage to fit our lives and two little kitties into a 10 ft Uhaul and drive back across the country. I still think about those little vases, mirrors and odds and ends that I tossed before I left. But, out with the old and in with the new – er – “new for me” anyway since most of my newfound goodies are from yard sales or estate sales. 🙂

Thought I’d share a bit of my bedroom as it’s coming along quite nicely I must say so myself. 😉 At least my side of the bedroom anyway. Kellen hasn’t honed in on his decorating skills yet, so his side is blank walls. 😉 Enjoy!

My “calming corner”

My “wannabe vanity”

Love these!!!

Need to get some hooks so I can hang more things on this super cutie owl!

Everyone needs a Frida candle and wooden Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken, don’t they???

Totally splurged on these knobs at Joann’s! But I heart them!!

And the grand finale, my Oh-So-lovely closet!! There’s even a light on the inside! Woop! Getting up there in the world! 😉
